Distinguished Chancellor Foggo, President Harman, Respected Director Yu, Respected Director Li, Honorable guests, staffs and students,

Though freezing cold outside, we are surrounded by warm friendships which unfold a beautiful picture in front of us. Today, we are delighted to gather at Liaoning University where the atmosphere is filled with affection and friendships for the celebration of the 10th anniversary of Asia Australia Business College. The rejoice felt at the celebration in Victoria University is carried on here where we reflect on yesterday, cherish today and look to tomorrow.

On behalf of students and staff of Liaoning University, I’d like to send my sincere regards to VU delegation members who flew over long distance to show their love for AABC. And my great thanks go to leaders and alumni for their strong support to AABC in its growth. And also I’ll present my highest tribute to the teachers who have devoted themselves to their work at AABC without asking for any rewards.

The year 2009 happens to be the 37th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Australia, both of which play a significant role in the Asia-Pacific region. The past 37 years have seen mutual political respect, economic complementation, and cultural interflow, making relations between people of the two countries far-ranging and deep-reaching, economic and trade cooperation more productive. It is to be noted that Australia was the first country to acknowledge China’s market economy with our entry into the WTO in 2001 and established trade and investment partnership with China, making us Australia’s largest trade partner and most important export destination. Support and cooperation of Australia is indispensible to China’s economic boom. Today the strategic relationship between the two countries is highlighted with increasing importance in the reinforcement of cooperation; hence both sides, more than ever, emphasize exchanges, respect and consideration of mutual interests and concerns, and progress in long-term friendly cooperative relationship with overall situation taken into account.

A healthy and stable relationship between the two countries is favorable for further development of educational communication. Australia possesses a world-class educational system. Australian government is fully aware of the impact of education on economic and social sustainable development, attaching great importance to promoting international educational services, making it one of the three pillar industries in Australia. The ratio of Australian universities ranking top 50 in the world is the highest. As a developing country, China is sparing no effort to switch from a big country of education to a powerful one. As famed futurist John Naisbitt notes in his book China’s Megatrends: there has been rapid growth in China’s active cooperation and communication in education with the rest of the world. Not a single country can beat China in the number of students studying abroad. Learning Chinese language has become a world-wide trend. The master with none inaccurate prophecies predicts that the future world will see China at the center. There are over one hundred thousand Chinese students registered in Australia, making China its biggest source of international students. The two countries have jointly produced numerous high-level professionals, which contributes to the development of both sides respectively, serves as a bridge of intercommunication, and enhance balanced and mutual development economically and socially. Under such favorable circumstances, both Liaoning University and Victoria University are the beneficiaries who add their efforts to the exchange and cooperation in economy, politics, and culture, etc. between China and Australia.

Liaoning University is a comprehensive one attached to Liaoning Province, one of the ‘211 Project’ key universities in China, with disciplines of literature, history, philosophy, economics, law, science, engineering, management, etc. It has more 1400 staff members and 26000 students (18000 undergraduates, 6700 postgraduates, and 1300 international students). We have produced altogether 11000 international students from all over the world including Australia. In the face of unprecedented challenges and opportunities, Liaoning University seizes up the situation and step forward, clearly putting forward the objective of building it into one both teaching and research oriented, with major international impact; level of internationalization, known as the indicator of accomplishing the objective, is further interpreted: scale and quality of international education is in the leading position among universities in Liaoning Province and one of the best among other similar institutions; excellent foreign educational recourses are taken full advantage of to upgrade the quality of Sino-foreign jointly-run schools into first-class; we open up foreign market, export excellent teaching recourses, and establish such cooperation with other countries. The past decade has witnessed AABC from an initial attempt to fruitful outcome of Sino-foreign joint institution. Moreover, AABC has become the model of our cooperation with other countries, known by everyone in Liaoning Province, even in China.

Liaoning University and Victoria University have a deep friendship. It was my second year in office as the Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Committee of Liaoning University in 2005 that I led a delegation to visit Victoria University. The rich academic and cultural atmosphere, advanced educational ideas, and beautiful campuses made a deep impression on me, and its spirit of rigorous scholarship still dwells in my memory. We can know each other well no matter how distant we are, just like we can still be called neighbors even we are ten thousand kilometers away from each other. Although we, the two universities, are located in the two different hemispheres of the world, we have come together because of our shared beliefs and pursuits. Today, we are very pleased to see the development of even closer ties between the two universities, and now we are making a great advance in joint education from undergraduate level to that of postgraduate in the manner of innovative training model. There is a saying in China: “Make still further progress (make another step at the top of a pole hundred feet high)”. Here, we should be very proud that Liaoning University and Victoria University have cooperated for 10 years, exemplifying the ten-year glorious progress, experiencing all sorts of difficulties and hardships together, and sharing success with each other. We have cooperated for ten years, and we hope that we will continue to move forward together with self-improvement and persistence to make a brighter future for AABC in the next 10 years or decades.

Finally, I wish the 10th Anniversary Celebration of AABC a great success! May Ms Foggo, Ms Harman, all the guests and friends good health, and joy during your stay in China!
